Every project starts with an idea, and the ideas must then be put into a form which can be used by tradesmen to turn it into reality. Computer Assisted Design (CAD) is a powerful tool which is fast and precise. It allows easy visualization in the form of photo-realistic 3D renderings which can be adjusted for lighting, shadows, colors, textures, and viewpoints.

Changes and revisions can be made quickly, and other background information such as material lists will update automatically.

At Cutting Edge, we use Cabinet Vision, a powerful program which has capabilities far beyond ordinary kitchen design software utilized by others such as the big box retailers. The exact methods used in actual shop fabrication are used in the computer program, right down to detailed editing of minute molding profiles and complicated shapes. A client’s original idea can be designed, rendered, and revised with complete accuracy without fuss, and there will be no surprises when they see their finished project.

For building design, we utilize Solid Builder, which has equally powerful features. Structures of any kind can be designed down to every single stick of wood, and then looked at and even walked through in 3D.  Colors and textures can be scanned and applied. All the while, window and door schedules, material lists, etc. are running in the background, continuously updated as things are added or changed.

Both of these programs are examples of computer modeling, which are more than just lines drawn on paper, but assemblies of virtual parts which have the programmed attributes of the actual components. Thus, the computer knows the difference between framing materials, concrete, roofing materials, etc. It eliminates design mistakes such as having two objects occupying the same space and generates very accurate cost estimates.
